Daniel Egnéus

28 October 2011

Daniel Egnéus is a self-taught artist, who has created award-winning work for clients such as Haagen-Dasz, BMW, Nike, Swarovski, Penguin Books, and Audi. Recently, he published a gothic interpretation of ‘Little Red Riding Hood’ for Harper Collins, based on the classic Brothers Grimm fairytale.

Born in Sweden, Daniel has lived in Prague, London, Berlin, Bologna, and Rome. He now resides in Milan, where he works in a seventeenth-century studio on a canal, designed by Leonardo da Vinci. Finding inspiration in [what is clearly] a rich life experience, he masterfully juxtaposes loose swashes of color with intricate line work, to create effortlessly bewitching and elegant images.

Baroque.me visualizes the first Prelude from Bach’s Cello Suites. Using the math behind string length and pitch, it came from a simple idea: what if all the notes were drawn as strings? Instead of a stream of classical notation on a page, this interactive project highlights the music’s underlying structure and subtle shifts.” —Alexander Chen

“All of my collages are composed by hand — cut from books I’ve been collecting for years, and painstakingly pieced together as seamlessly as possible. They create themselves through a process beginning with a loose concept, followed by a series of trials and errors, subtle maneuvers, selection/elimination, harmonious unions, and happy accidents. It is a meditative process, and there is a lot of decision-making behind each element involved.

My general intent, throughout all my work, is to portray the world as a flawed thing of beauty — a place that shines brightly, but has a dark side to match.”
