The Mobius Strip… shoe?
22 May 2009
'Fold' by United Nude
It is just a guess that mathematician August F. Möbius never foresaw his algebraic equation for the curious Mobius Strip, becoming an inspiration for the smart shoe designed by Rem D. Koolhaas, called ‘Fold’.
Found in the classic collection at United Nude, conceptually ‘Fold’ is the fluent movement of a single piece of elastic fabric. Anyone who appreciates wearing shoes will understand this translates into comfort beyond ones expectations.
The shoes mixture of elastic, PVC, carbon fiber, and occasionally rubber, allow it to bend while enclosing your foot inside a compact shape of lasting support.
It’s an ideal way to carry your feet in public. Alas it is only for women.

Handmade Nation
10 February 2009Good design is slick, clean, and about large budgets (and egos), right? Not always.
There is an entire movement that has swept the world. It is all about a more organic community oriented approach towards design that many believe in so wholeheartedly they have titled it The DIY (do it yourself) Community.
Director Faythe Levine has edited footage she collected from 15 cities, and over 80 DIY community pioneers around the United States, into ‘Handmade Nation‘, a 65 minute film that documents this cultural tendency.
(The book, written in collaboration with Cortney Heimerl, can be purchased at Amazon here).
Coming this week:
Feb 11: New York City, Power House Arena (Book signing and panel)
Feb 12, 14, & 15: New York City, Museum of Arts and Design
More will be held in Toronto, Barcelona, Melbourne, San Francisco, Madison, Eureka, Portland.

Culture Hero – James Meyer Opens in New York
05 January 2009“Culture Hero“, a solo exhibition of paintings and works on paper by veteran artist James Meyer opens, Thursday January 8 in New York City at the Morgan Lehman Gallery in the Chelsea arts district. It is not to be missed.
A unique body of work, the “Culture Hero” exhibit features pieces in black and white that are reminiscent of constellations in space. Imagine lying on a hill one dark evening staring into the stars and you see a boy crying, then another child shushing you and yet another, balancing on a rope.
Emotions work in complex ways that as adults we often fail to acknowledge. The open hearts of children frequently show us how precious every instinctive state of mind is. They also show us the joy in being. This presentation of seemingly simple content is in actuality revealing of the challenges of being an adult in todays culture. We all need a hero, why not our own inner child?
