In The Special Danger Givan Lötz draws attention to conflated notions of Death, Sex, and Spirituality. Owing to a philosophical reading of the Ecstatic Experience, Lötz measures the ethics of Eroticism up against the aesthetics of Prohibition, suggesting a form of reasoning without boundaries. From Lötz’s perspective, without Prohibition there can be no transgression and therefore no Eroticism.
The ubiquitous relationship between proximity and promiscuity in relation to Eroticism and Prohibition is unpacked in The Special Danger, manifested in four interrelated pictorial concepts pertaining to birth, Sex, and Death. A fifth central sculptural concept is included and given the tentative and simultaneous role of the overseer and offender, also acting as an anchoring agent for the display of the entire narrative. In all, the five concepts include: The Ecstatic Experience, Death & Danger, Sex Death, Eroticism & Perversion, and Sacred Boundaries & Transgression.

All religions have an ecstatic component and all involve altering human consciousness to some extent by prayer, meditation, chanting, dancing, fasting etc. Although belief in a non-physical spiritual realm has diminished as part of our post-darwinian age it has not disappeared. Even those who have relinquished their belief are prone, if not compelled, to seek out substitutes. The altered states associated with Sex (orgasm), Drugs (intoxication), Madness (psychosis) are not only substitutes for religious experience but in some instances accomplices to these mystical practices.
To Whom It May Concern: (TWIMC) is an interactive installation which functions as a metaphor for a software application, programmed by Michelle Son, in which the user experience is recreated in a real-time physical space. Having control over the functions and features built into the application, users are invited to step into the programme to explore the features and visual effects by using their sense of smell, touch, sight and sound. Based on the simulated templates of Microsoft Word, users are immersed in a hyper real office environment where the virtual becomes tactile and the template is embellished. Watch the Movie.
Jaunted Haunts Press was founded in 2008 by Righard Kapp, in an effort to formalise the output of his \/#/ cd-r imprint, which in itself was a continuation of where his original One Minute Trolley Dash label left off. Within three years the label’s output has grown to 5 albums, all of which have received considerable acclaim from respected writers such as Richard Haslop and Lloyd Gedye.
The label aims to release music that will stand the test of time, from singular artists who dare to follow their own creative path. Physical releases are packaged in limited edition silkscreened sleeves, while as of late the music is also available in digital format, not so limited edition.
Undoing is a butoh performance series that explores modes of erasing the individual mind’s claim to the body. This radical point of erasure between object and subject is pursued in order to achieve a quality of emptiness. Once the individual has been eclipsed, the ego silenced, the body will be danced. Undoing will undo itself everyday on the Drostdy Lawns at the National Arts Festival Grahamstown.

Everyday South Africans and their bicycles. A photographic book in the making.
Photographers Stan Engelbrecht and Nic Grobler are using the pledge-for-reward Kickstarter social platform to take pre-orders (with benefits) for a photographic book they are working on about contemporary South African bicycle commuter culture. A $50 pledge for example is essentially a pre-order for the book. If they do not reach their funding goal the project will be cancelled and no pledges will be forwarded from the project backers to them.

Them-And-Us is an initiative aimed at bringing together 20 European and 20 African visual artists, designers, illustrators and photographers. The project aims to explore the similarities and differences between first and third world views and aesthetics by pairing up artists from Europe with their African counterparts.
Through a series of 20 double sided posters, artists were invited to explore the notion of ‘Them–And–Us’ and the broader theme of tolerance (or intolerance). Them–And–Us is curated by South African design studio, disturbance, Stockholm resident and graphic designer, Noel Pretorius and British designer/writer Adrian Shaughnessy who wrote and edited the accompanying publication.

Paradise Apparatus, a new solo exhibition by Julia Rosa Clark, opens tonight at Whatiftheworld Gallery. “This show concludes a trilogy that included the acclaimed Hypocrite’s Lament (2006) & Fever Jubilee (2007/8). Continuing her exploration of our intricate and fraught relationship with Nature, Paradise Apparatus explores the sensations and mysteries of chemistry, perception and colour as they relate to the search for fulfilment with references to aspects of science, alchemy, theatre-craft and art making.”
